  SOCIAL OUTREACH CENTRE GETS
A HELPING HAND

The Emmanuel Cathedral parish centre is a gigantic building as old and grand as the
cathedral but neglected to the point that it is bleak and derelict.

On Sunday, the Denis Hurley Centre will be launched by Archbishop Wilfrid Napier and
a proposed outreach project will be presented to potential partners, funders, interested
parties, faith groups, sister organisations, the media and public.

“This is the right time to restore the parish and use it to capacity to service the community
around us,” says Father Steven Tully.
The plan is to give the building a major upgrade and make it more useful for the social
service and educational objectives of the cathedral without compromising the centre’s
heritage, and adding to its architectural value.

Through networking with other churches and religious organisations in Durban, it is hoped
that the parish will be at the centre of a ring of support for those in need.
